Forming a Community Land Trust
We will:
Identify the Need and Gather Support:
Begin by identifying the housing or community needs that a CLT could address.
Engage with local community members, stakeholders, and potential partners to build support and form a steering group.
Develop a Vision and Objectives:
Establish a clear vision and set of objectives that reflect the community's needs and aspirations. This could include affordable housing, community facilities, or protecting local green spaces.
Incorporate the CLT:
Choose an appropriate legal structure. Most CLTs in the UK are registered as Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs) or Community Benefit Societies.
Draft and adopt governing documents, such as articles of association, that define the CLT's purpose, membership, and decision-making processes.
Secure Funding and Land:
Explore various funding sources, including grants, loans, and community shares. The National CLT Network provides resources and advice on financing options.
Identify and secure land for development, which could involve purchasing land, receiving land donations, or working with local authorities and developers.
Develop the Project:
Work with professionals such as architects, planners, and builders to design and plan your development.
Ensure community involvement throughout the planning and development stages to maintain alignment with the community's vision and needs.
